Here are some tips and tricks for portrait photography that may come in handy next time you take a portrait photograph.
- You may notice that when you take lighter skin tones on camera or maybe something bright like birds, there is a lot of white and hence ruins the picture balance and focus. When using Aperture Priority mode, try using exposure compensation. Dial in up to +1 of positive exposure compensation to lighten up peoples’ faces.
- When shooting portraits, it is important to focus on the subject only hence to blur the background. Set wide aperture to capture the backdrop lightly.
- As a general rule, make your shutter speed higher than your focal length.
- It is natural for people to move around or blink or change facial expressions while getting a picture taken. To overcome this, use faster shutter speed. While in aperture priority increase your shutter speed by simply increasing your ISO and while in low light you may increase it a lot.
- Make sure your lens is chosen wisely. A wider one will capture more surroundings and a narrower will get you the perfect portrait photograph.
- Don’t be afraid to try creative compositions. Zoom in for more inspired sots and let the subject be on one side.
- Don’t forget to use a reflector indoor or outdoor! This will help you fill unwanted shadows and create desirable results!
- Make sure to focus the camera properly. Set the AF point, half press the shutter button to focus then recompose to position your subject off to one side before fully pressing the button.
- Make sure you see your subject as well. How they pose or even the slightest bit of change in the facial expression can make drastic changes to your portrait.
- Use your creative self with the flash gun! Light your subjects from side to add drama and try other points as well.
- Invest in a wireless flash trigger. While your camera may be able to give a good amount of light, flash triggers can always give an extra burst of light.
- With a flash trigger, invest a stand for your flash. This will enable you to be assisted while you can adjust the flash in your accordance.
